On Day 5, the Career Center will send out a brief email summary of current opportunities, reminders, and useful info for students.  The following information was emailed to all students on October 28.  Please encourage your student to check their email *daily* for these and other great opportunities.

Career Exploration

WORKFORCE NOW CAREER FAIR – November 2nd, 11 AM – 12:30 PM at the Wyndham in York

This Fair is for York County juniors and seniors looking to start a career right after high school.  Local businesses and employers in construction, masonry, excavation, HVAC, and more will be in attendance and looking to connect with you.  Juniors and Seniors who wish to attend will be taken by SWHS bus to the fair on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd.  Interested students must hand in a permission slip to Mrs. Berkeible by Monday, October 31.  Stop by the Counseling Office TODAY to pick up a flyer with more info and a permission slip!

UPMC HEALTH CAREERS NIGHT – November 2nd, 6 – 8 PM, UPMC Outpatient Center, Mechanicsburg

Open to students (and their parents) who are considering a career in the Health field.  15+ health care departments will be represented, as well as local colleges and universities with health care majors.  See the UPMC Health Careers Nightfor more details and to register.

Pre Apprenticeship Programs

Student Banker Apprenticeship Program (Sponsored by People’s Bank). 12th grade only. Deadline approaching – October 31 – See Mrs. Berkebile ASAP

  • Requirements: minimum GPA of 3.0 and strong interest in business/finance/banking.
  • Eight, daytime sessions (January 2023 – May 2023).  Some sessions virtual, some on site @ the bank.
  • Must provide your own transportation.
  • This experience will help Seniors learn about the banking industry, develop their resumes, explore possible career opportunities, and collaborate with PeoplesBank professionals.

College Bound Info

Seniors – Early Decision and Early Action deadlines are just around the corner (usually Nov 1 and Nov 15).  Students applying Regular Decision should also be working in earnest to get everything submitted as early as possible.  We know this is a stressful time of year!  Take a breath, make a list, and stay in communication with your counselor.  You can do it!

Open to parents and students.  Learn about athletic scholarships and the college recruiting process.  Speaker: Mr. Rick Wire from Dynamite Sports will present this one-hour seminar entitled “Guiding the College-Bound Athlete”

Seniors: 

  • Now is the time to complete college applications.  Early decision deadlines can be as early as November 1.  Even if you are considering applying regular decision, submitting earlier is better.  Get on college websites and/or the Common Application and work on your applications a little bit each day.
  • The FAFSA opened October 1st!  If you are planning on ANY higher education that charges tuition (college, university, community college, tech school, anything!) you will need to fill out the FAFSA this Fall.  Plan to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible:  www.fafsa.gov  Quick Intro to the FAFSA:How to Fill out the FAFSA

ACE Mentor Program

CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN STEAM!

The ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program is an after school, weekly program held in York open to grades 10, 11, and 12.  The mission is to engage, excite, and enlighten high school students to pursue careers in architecture, engineering, and construction, including skilled trades, through mentoring and continued support for their advancement into the industry.

Electrician Pre-Apprentice Program (Sponsored by York Electrical Institute & YCAL) 11th and 12th graders
Six, daytime sessions (Jan. 2023 – May 2023).
Topics covered: Electrical and Construction Safety, Component Installation, Wiring, Reading Blueprints/schematics, Conduit Bending, Employability Skills.
Must provide own transportation.
Students completing the pre-apprenticeship will be given an interview for the full apprenticeship program at York Electrical (1st year apprenticeships start at $26K per year, right out of high school. Increase of almost $8K per year for the next 5 years – no tuition costs, no debt)
