Financial Aid Information Night – Wednesday December 5th

This program is especially important for parents of seniors who anticipate enrolling in higher education in 2013-2014, and will be informative for parents of all students who are planning for post-secondary education.  A representative from Penn State York will be on hand to explain the ins and outs of the Financial Aid process and address questions.

In case you missed the Freshman Parent’s Program

Last Thursday the Guidance Office hosted a Freshman Parent’s “Planning for College” program.    This program covered planning for post-secondary education in the following ways:  making the most of high school, understanding college admissions, PSAT/SAT/ACT testing, the college search process, and financial aid.   For those that missed it, you can access the power point here:   9thGradeParentProgram2012-2013t

Kutztown University Science Shadow Day – Deadline to register is tomorrow!

We received notice from Kutztown University that they are inviting prospective high school students interested in majors in biology, chemistry, geology, environmental and marine science and physics to shadow a current KU student for the day.  This Science Shadow Day will take place next Wednesday, November 14th.   The registration deadline is Nov. 9 – tomorrow!

Here is a rough schedule for the day:

  • 8 a.m. – Arrival/drop off at Boehm Science Center main lobby & meet host students
  • 8:30 a.m. – Admissions presentation
  • 9:00-11:00a.m. – Classroom visits, campus tour with host student
  • 11:30a.m.-2p.m. – Lunch, classroom visits continued
  • 2:00-2:40p.m. – Faculty roundtable to answer questions
  • 2:40-3:00p.m. – Visit lab class
  • 3 – 3:15 p.m. – Departure/pick up

Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from Kutztown’s campus. Lunch is provided for students.

Dual Enrollment

Upperclassman who are interested in taking college courses for both high school and college credit should consider Dual Enrollment opportunities.  Current Juniors and Seniors who would like to take college classes during the Spring semester of 2013 are still able to do so.   Read the information below to learn more about two local colleges that offer Dual Enrollment for our students.
Penn State York (offers classes at Gutherie Memorial Library in Hanover!)
Penn State York will again offer Dual Enrollment courses for 11th and 12th grade students at Guthrie Memorial Library for the spring semester.  Courses offered include:  Psychology, Elementary Statistics, and Effective Speech.    Other course offerings are available if students wish to travel to the campus of Penn State York.  All Dual Enrollment classes are offered to students at 1/2 the normal tuition.  Contact the Penn State York Office of Admissions by email ykadmission@psu.edu<mailto:ykadmission@psu.edu or call 717-771-4040 to obtain an application packet.
York College
York College will begin registering Dual Enrollment students for Spring 2013 semester courses beginning on Monday, December 10, 2012.
To register for courses, students must have a Dual Enrollment registration appointment and the appropriate Student Agreement completed.

Freshman Parents’ “Planning for College” Program

This Thursday, November 8th from 6:30 PM – to 8 PM the Guidance Office will host our annual Freshmen Parents’ “Planning for College” Program.  This program provides the parents of 9th grade students with a preview of the process of college preparing for and applying for higher education.  The presentation takes place in our high school computer labs.  We will discuss how to make the most of the high school years, college entrance tests (i.e. SATs), the college search process, college applications, financial aid, and more.  Time will be set aside for parents to ask questions and explore online resources.
