The oratorical contest is open to all students under age 19 as of October 1, 2021

The topic this year is “Staying Optimistic in Challenging Times”

Interested students should prepare a 4-5 minute speech.

The local club will award $500 for first place, $250 for second place, and $125 for third place. All 3 winners are expected to attend a luncheon on March 15, 2022.

Gettysburg College Jewish Studies Essay Contest

The Gettysburg College Jewish Studies committee would like to invite high school students to participate in their Third Annual Georges Lieber Essay Contest on Resistance.  In 2,000 words, students are encouraged to raise questions, single out issues, and identify dilemmas involving resistance.  See attached flyer for in depth information.

AWARDS: 1st prize – $1000;  2nd prize – $500;  3rd prize – $300;  Two Honorable Mentions – $200 each

YWCA Hanover’s Safe Home Essay/Video Contest

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the YWCA Hanover’s Safe Home needs your help!

In an effort to promote awareness, students in grades 9-12 are invited to write an essay or make a video describing the changes they would like to see in their school, neighborhood, or community to help end domestic violence.  Essays should be a minimum of 600 words and videos should be at least 2 minutes long.  Details about how to enter are in the flyer link below.

2021 PA American Legion 86th Annual Essay Contest

All students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to participate in this year’s Pennsylvania American Legion essay contest “What Does The 26th Amendment Mean To Me?”

Essays should be no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words.  For a complete list of rules and regulations, please see the attached flyer.

AWARDS: First place winner – $3,500, a plaque, and a trip to the PA  American Legion Convention in July to read the winning essay to the assembled delegates;  Second place winner – $3,000 and a plaque;  Third place winner – $2,500 and a plaque

DEADLINE: Entries must be submitted to a LOCAL American Legion Post before January 9, 2021

The Apprentice Writer

The Apprentice Writer, a national literary magazine for high school students is distributed to 3,000 high schools around the United States.  We are currently accepting submissions for our 2018 issue and we hope you will pass this information along.

The submission process for The Apprentice Writer is now completely online. Students can go to The Apprentice Writer webpage (www.apprenticewriter.com) or directly to the submission page at https://tinyurl.com/apprenticewriter2018.  We accept submissions in poetry, prose, and black and white photography.

In addition to considering submissions for publication, we will be recognizing one Outstanding Writer and one runner up in both poetry and prose. The Outstanding Writers will receive $200 each and runners up will receive $50 each, judged by Glen Retief, the director of the Susquehanna University Writers Institute. Publication in The Apprentice Writer is also a good credential for applications to undergraduate creative writing programs.

In addition to The Apprentice Writer, the Writers Institute at Susquehanna University offers the following opportunities for 11th and 12th grade students:

  • The 31st Summer Writers Workshop:  This weeklong experience offers talented high school writers entering 11th and 12th grade the opportunity to work in intensive, small-group workshops led by nationally recognized authors. Available workshops are fiction, memoir, poetry and screenwriting. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2018 Summer Writers Workshop, which takes place July 22-28, 2018.
  • Creative Writing Day : The 2018 Creative Writing Day will be held on October 22. Students are able to attend this day of readings and creative writing classes with parents or teachers.
